Hinduism
Hinduism is one of the oldest living religions in the world,
having begun in around 1,500 BCE, but tracing some of its roots
to at least
2,500 BCE. Hinduism is based on a number of religious texts including the four
Vedas, the eighteen Puranas, and the epic poems Mahabharata and Ramayana.
There are believed to be around 1 billion adherents of Hinduism
(making it the third-largest organized religion after Christianity and Islam),
of whom
around 890 million live in
India.
Significant populations of Hindus are also found in
Nepal,
Sri Lanka,
and in Bali,
Indonesia.
Additionally, Hindu populations are also found found in those
countries containing Indian diaspora such as
the United Kingdom,
Canada and
the
United States of America.

Click Here | Product Description: High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ahimsa is a Sanskrit term meaning to do no harm (literally: the avoidance of violence - himsa). It is an important tenet of the religions that originated in ancient India (Hinduism, Buddhism and especially Jainism). Ahimsa is a rule of conduct that bars the killing or injuring of living beings. It is closely connected with the notion that all kinds of violence entail negative karmic consequences. The extent to which the principle of non-violence can or should be applied to different life forms is controversial between various authorities, movements and currents within the three religions and has been a matter of debate for thousands of years. Though the origins of the concept of ahimsa are unknown, the earliest references to ahimsa are found in the texts of historical Vedic religion, dated to 8th century BCE. Here, ahinsa initially relates to "non-injury" without a moral connotation, but later to non-violence to animals and then, to all beings. The idea emerges again in the Hindu texts Mahabharata and Manu Smriti, where ahimsa is said to be merited by good karma. |

Click Here | Product Description: High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Several contemporary groups, collectively termed Hindu reform movements, strive to introduce regeneration and reform to Hinduism. Although these movements are very individual in their exact philosophies they generally stress the spiritual, secular and logical and scientific aspects of the Vedic traditions, creating a form that is egalitarian that does not discriminate based on J?ti (caste or subcaste), gender, or race. Thus, most modern Hindu reform movements advocate a return to the ancient, egalitarian forms of Hinduism, and view aspects of modern Hinduism, such as discrimination and the caste system, as being corrupt results from colonialism and foreign influence. |
