Here is some information about the numbers and demographics of Hindus around the world:
  • Hinduism is generrally considered the third largest world religion after Christianity and Islam (although by some measures, Buddhism is the largest religion).

  • There are more than 1 billion Hindus living around the world.

  • There are three countries which have a majority of Hindus among their populations. These countries are:


  • The countries with the most Hindus among their populations are India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia (mainly living on the island of Bali).

    • There are approximately 960 million Hindus living in India.

    • There are approximately 23 million Hindus living in Nepal.

    • There are approximately 15 million Hindus living in Bangladesh.

    • There are approximately 3.3 million Hindus living in the Indonesian island of Bali.

  • As well as the above, there are also significant Hindu populations in several other countries neighbouring India such as Sri Lanka and Bhutan.

  • Because of migration since the 19th century, there also now significant Hindu populations in many countries around the world, including Guyana, Suriname, Belize, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, and several Middle Eastern countries in the Gulf region.

  • As well as Hindus with ethnic roots in India, there are also a growing number of Hindu converts to Hinduism around the world. This is principally because of the efforts of organizations such as International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement.
